Sewer Monitoring | ToltHawk
Wastewater / Sewer Monitoring

See inside your sewer network before problems reach the surface.

Continuous level monitoring for sewer lines and manholes that helps utilities detect surcharging, blockages and overflow risk early.

Overview

Know what is happening below ground.

Sewer systems carry out a service people rarely think about until it fails. When a line backs up or a manhole overflows, the consequences reach streets, homes, waterways and public health.

Sewer Monitoring from ToltHawk gives utilities a live view into the network, so conditions underground are known instead of guessed.

The challenge

Problems are hidden until they become urgent.

Most of a sewer network is buried, which makes problems hard to see. Utilities often find out about blockages or overflows from a resident’s call, by which point the damage has started. Heavy rainfall can push levels up quickly. Manual manhole inspections take time, can be hazardous for crews and only show conditions at the moment of the visit. Overflows can also cause environmental harm and regulatory consequences.

How ToltHawk helps

Turn sewer levels into actionable information.

ToltHawk sensors can be placed at selected monitoring points to measure water levels and send readings remotely to the ToltHawk dashboard. When levels rise toward a configured threshold, alerts can notify your team so they can investigate and respond. Historical data can help identify network locations under repeated strain and focus maintenance efforts.

Installation note: Sensor type, manhole compatibility, mounting method and confined-space procedures should be confirmed for the specific site before deployment.

How it works

From sewer readings to earlier action.

Collect level information remotely, set the alerts you need and review changes over time.

01 / SELECT

Choose monitoring points

Select manholes and pipe sections with a history of surcharging, blockages or overflow risk.

02 / INSTALL

Plan the installation

Choose a suitable sensor and mounting approach for each location, with access and worker safety planned in advance.

03 / MEASURE

Track changing levels

Record water-level changes and send readings remotely to the monitoring platform.

04 / RESPOND

Alert and analyze

Use configured thresholds for notifications and review historical patterns across wet and dry weather.

Key benefits

Earlier insight. More targeted response.

Earlier overflow warning

Thresholds below known critical levels can give teams an opportunity to investigate before an overflow occurs.

Faster blockage detection

Unusual level changes can point to developing problems and help teams decide where to inspect.

Safer crews

Remote monitoring can reduce routine manual checks in hazardous locations.

Targeted maintenance

Use measured conditions to help prioritize cleaning, inspection and repair work.

Records for reporting

Historical readings can support operational reviews, documentation and compliance efforts.

Rainfall insight

Compare patterns during wet and dry periods to investigate possible inflow and infiltration issues.

Where it is used

Monitoring for critical wastewater infrastructure.

Keep conditions visible at the locations where early information can make a difference.

Municipal sewer utilities

Track collection systems across a service area and identify locations that need attention.

Wastewater authorities

Monitor critical trunk lines and approaches to pump stations.

Public works departments

Support response planning and reduce avoidable emergency inspections.

Industrial and commercial sites

Watch private sewer connections and selected discharge points.

FAQs

Common questions.

Can sensors be installed in existing manholes?

Compatibility depends on the sensor configuration, manhole geometry, environmental conditions and required measurement range. ToltHawk should confirm the suitable sensor and mounting method for your site before installation.

Will I be alerted before an overflow?

Alerts can be configured around agreed level thresholds. Setting a threshold below a known critical level may provide time to investigate, but warning time depends on site conditions and how quickly levels change. Monitoring cannot guarantee prevention of every overflow.

Does it work alongside stormwater monitoring?

Sewer and stormwater monitoring can be considered together to help teams understand how rainfall affects drainage and wastewater systems. Confirm the required sensors and dashboard configuration with ToltHawk for your deployment.
